Daughter of THOMAS MAXWELL (master blacksmith) and AGNES JOHNSTON NB On the 1861 census they are living at Glensone, New  Abbey, Kirkcudbright.  John was a roadmaker and Isabella was a housekeeper. By 1871 they had moved in with John’s father JAMES MURRAY and were living  at East Woncuck, Cummertrees.   On the 1881 Census, John was living at East Howcreek, Cummertrees, Dumfries.  He is listed the Head, a farmer of 130 Acres, Widower at this time and aged 53.  Daughter AGNES JOHNSTONE (now) LOCKHART was visiting them.  In 1891 census John is living at East Howcreek  with sons James and William Rae.  They have three servants.
